This Food Rescue Base Stops Fruit And Veg Going To Waste At NewSpitalfields Market

This food rescue base prevents fruit and vegetables from being wasted on New Spitalfields Market

From Michelin starred restaurants to world-class markets, there are plenty of incredible food in the capital. With 28% of Londoners living in poverty, too many people are starving.

City Harvest is working to change that, to pass on surplus food to needy Londoners - while protecting the environment. Now the charity is getting a brand new base in the leading UK fruit and vegetable wholesale market.

The New Spitalfields Market in Leyton supplies over 100 fresh produce companies and of course there are a great many fruits and vegetables. City Harvest has been launched twice a week since Christmas to collect and distribute the surplus products to those most in need, both directly and through the network of partner organizations, including homeless shelters and women's shelters. So far, more than 10 tons of products have been reused. However, a permanent grassroots base will allow the charity to feed thousands more Londoners.

Not only does City Harvest provide the capital city's residents for free, it also helps save the planet by offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. Reducing disposal costs also benefits the market tenants
